FAO: dairy essential for nutrient security

The importance of dairy in the world established during the World Dairy Summit in Rotterdam, the Netherlands

Due to a growing world population and increasing prosperity, the demand for good nutrition that provides an optimal intake of nutrients with a low impact on the environment is growing. Dairy products can play a role in increasing the worldwide food security. The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, the FAO, has stated this in the Declaration of Rotterdam, a statement drawn up by the FAO in cooperation with the International Dairy Federation (IDF).

FAO: zuivel essentieel voor terugdringen armoedeThe Declaration of Rotterdam was signed on 19 October 2016 by Ren Wang, Assistant Director-General of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and Jeremy Hill, President of the International Dairy Federation. This took place during the final meeting of the World Dairy Summit, held in Rotterdam in October 2016.

Both parties state that dairy products are important for a well-balanced, nutritious and healthy diet. The production of dairy is important for the income of the population and it makes a substantial contribution to the economic development of countries. At the same time it is stated that the dairy sector plays a key role in the control of ecosystems in the world, in climate change and in biodiversity.

FAO and IDF agree that instruments and guidelines are to be set up to make it easier to produce dairy in a sustainable way. Sustainable production methods need to be supported and, additionally, sustainability must be monitored.
